Learning how to grow your own food is the most empowering feeling. š± Itās such a joy to watch a little seed germinate, then sprout & grow!
Yes we are living in uncertain times, we have the very real threat of shortages across the supply of food, petrol & other essentials. Once upon a time I used to make fun of my āDoomsday Prepperā husband but now heās like, told you so!
However thereās seriously no need to panic, just get prepared!
A great place to start is growing some of your own food. Not everyone has the space to grow heaps of food, pots and grow bags work really well. But if youāre in a position to, get to work in your backyard. I know you might love your lawns but I figure we canāt eat grass.
We’ve set about planning and building an edible garden, itās been a process as we didnāt have thousands of dollars to dump into it. Thatās just not sustainable, you want your fresh organic produce to save you money not add to the burden of living expenses.
I wanted to take our time, learn permaculture, re-use & repurpose found items, get our soil lush & full of worms. I called on my clever friends who live & breath this for advice. I quickly found that I would preserve the integrity of our soil (and save big $) if I took a different path than the raised wooden garden beds Iād imaginedā¦
I collected cardboard boxes, laid them over our lawn & topped with beautiful wood-chips. This not only killed the grass & weeds itās also added so much goodness to our soil. Then I followed the āNo Digā garden beds š©š¼āš¾ which Iām loving! Thereās heaps of benefits to this method, from improving the quality of the soil by adding beneficial microbes, organisms and minerals. This means healthier, happier crops!
